Failed the Series 79 Exam? Here Is What Happens Next
A failed Series 79 attempt starts a 30-day retake clock, not the end of your banking career. What the waiting periods are, what happens to your sponsorship, and what to change before attempt two.
What happens if you fail the Series 79 exam?
If you fail the Series 79, you must wait 30 days before retaking it after a first or second failed attempt, and 180 days after a third or subsequent attempt. Your firm sponsorship and Form U4 filing normally stay in place unless your firm withdraws it, and you pay the exam fee again for each attempt. Most candidates who fail were strong on valuation mechanics but under-drilled on regulation, filing, and process rules.

A sequenced retake plan across valuation, deal mechanics, and regulation reps.
- Waiting periods are fixed: 30 days after the first and second failed attempts, 180 days after the third and beyond.
- A fail does not automatically end sponsorship — but firms have their own retake policies and patience, so communicate early.
- Change the prep, not just the date: diagnose which content area failed you and rebuild reps there, not across everything equally.

Section 15(a) requires any person engaged in the business of effecting securities transactions for the accounts of others to register as a broker-dealer. Regulation questions like this — not valuation math — are where most failed Series 79 attempts bleed points.
